For me, it was about creating space where individuals could be seen for their strengths and their stories, not their struggles.”

‘Feels Like Home’ gives adults in recovery space to create, be seen

A second round of “Feels Like Home” workshops with Serenity Recovery participants was held June 11 at the Murray Art Guild. Participants wrote poetry, created collages and worked in a relaxed, collaborative setting that encouraged creativity and connection.

“Feels Like Home” was a collaborative arts project for adults in recovery from addiction that used poetry and visual art to explore the many meanings of home. The project included workshops with participants from Neartown Recovery and Serenity Recovery and culminated in a public exhibition at the Murray Convention and Visitors Bureau in August.

The project was funded through a $5,000 Arts Access Assistance: Arts and Health grant awarded to The Murray Sentinel by the Kentucky Arts Council and carried out in partnership with the Murray Art Guild, Neartown and Serenity. Award-winning playwright and poet Constance Alexander led the poetry workshops, while MAG Executive Director Debi Henry Danielson led the visual arts workshops.
