The Murray Sentinel is a budding independent local newsroom in Murray, Kentucky, dedicated to covering issues of value and relevance to the residents of Calloway County.
MURRAY - Kentucky’s primary election is on Tuesday, May 21. Primary elections help select candidates who will be on the general election ballot in November. Kentucky has closed primaries, which means that only individuals registered as Democrats or Republicans can vote in partisan races.
MURRAY – Residents of Calloway County should not let their guard down tonight. Although the county has already seen significant storms both last night and earlier today, local weather expert Justin Holland said this evening that, with more storms expected after 9 p.m., the county is “not even close” to being past threats of severe weather.
Instead of turning away, the photojournalist is in the moment, following the action to capture iconic scenes that tell a story with pictures. When it comes to documenting the past, focusing on people and events that have been systematically obscured or even erased in the official story, a pro like Raymond Thompson Jr. applied creative techniques to resurrect Appalachian ghosts from the 1930s. His powerful testimony illuminates one of the worst industrial disasters in U.S. history, the Hawk’s Nest Tunnel and Dam.
MURRAY – Since 2013, the final Saturday in April is celebrated as Independent Bookstore Day. Not unlike Record Store Day, which was last Saturday, the American Booksellers Association (ABA) established the day to highlight, promote and celebrate the value of the indie bookstore community.
MURRAY – In a brief special called meeting Tuesday, the City of Murray Parks and Recreation Committee heard an update on several projects going on in the city park system, including how administrators plan to use technology to reduce vandalism of park facilities.

Brody is the quintessential “watchdog,” which is synonymous with sentinel. He is the embodiment of vigilance, loyalty and security, and what could be more patriotic than an American bulldog? He doesn’t attack; he doesn’t give chase. He simply notifies and stands firm as a buffer between his people and any potential threat. The goal of this media outlet is to protect and serve our community in the same fashion.
I’m Jessica Paine, founder of The Murray Sentinel. You may know me from my time as a citizen journalist, running the Calloway Covid-19 Count page on Facebook, or you may be familiar with my more recent work for another local news outlet. Being that I’m “from here,” you may have known me since I was “knee-high to a grasshopper,” although you knew me as Jessica Jones. But whether you know me or not, I’m glad you found your way here.
I started The Murray Sentinel because I think our community would benefit from – and deserves – having a truly independent, locally-focused news source. What you see now is only a taste of what I hope the Sentinel is to become – an inclusive and representative approach to maintaining a public well-informed of the happenings and inner-workings of the “friendliest small town” we call home.
To be clear, the Sentinel is in not affiliated with the Murray Ledger & Times. I understand that can be a little confusing because I previously worked for the Ledger. The purpose of the Sentinel is not to replace the Ledger, rather it is to enhance the breadth and depth of local news coverage available to our community.
For the time being, this is a purely voluntary effort on my part; however, I am in the process of bringing others on board to form a nonprofit. As a nonprofit newsroom, the Sentinel will be uniquely-positioned to serve the community because it will be community-sourced – “... of the people, by the people, for the people.”
The mission of the Sentinel is to promote and facilitate a broad spectrum of civic engagement, and you, dear reader, are integral to the process of making this endeavor successful. This may be my baby, but it takes a village to raise a child, right? From my perspective, I’m just the person who had the gumption to get it started. The Sentinel is ours. So, consider this a call to action.
Your feedback and collaboration are imperative!
What would you like to see in YOUR local paper? Is there a role you would like to play in its development? Maybe you have a way with words and can contribute content, or maybe you have expertise in a field that would suit you for an advisory role, like journalism, business or nonprofits.
Regardless, if you’ve managed to read this far, consider yourself recruited as an honorary staff member. The Murray Sentinel isn’t me. It’s you. It’s us.
