William C. "Chip" Adams, III: Candidate for Murray City Council

Posted

Candidate statement

I have been an attorney in private practice in Murray, Kentucky, since December 1997, and have raised my family here.

I have a rather unique perspective on the operations of our city government.  As an assistant city attorney, I have written and interpreted ordinances for the city regarding simple matters and highly complex matters.  As a private attorney, I have represented clients relative to the operations of city government when they have been aggrieved.  As a citizen and taxpayer, I have been supportive of certain policies enacted by the city.  Finally, as a citizen and taxpayer, I have been disappointed by certain policies and actions of the city. I would welcome the opportunity to take on a new role, as a Member of the Murray City Council, for the benefit of all citizens.

I have no specific agenda, other than making the City of Murray, Kentucky, better for all citizens, taxpayers and stakeholders.  That being said, I believe the most important task at hand for the City is to continue to improve existing city infrastructure and programs, continue to recruit business and industry to our community and to support existing business and industry, with input from all stakeholders.  When warranted, I will have no problem asking tough questions.

Questions and answers

In your opinion, who is the most underserved population in Murray? How would you use your position on the city council to address their needs?

Based upon my historical interaction with the City of Murray in a variety of capacities as referenced above, I have not seen the existence of an “underserved population” or an “overserved population.”  Rather, I have seen a collection of citizens who have sought elective office on the Murray City Council and who have done their best to support all citizens of the City of Murray, Kentucky.  I would welcome the opportunity to continue that tradition.

How would you make yourself accessible to constituents outside your existing personal and professional circles, and how would you ensure their concerns are heard?

I have maintained an office in downtown Murray, Kentucky, since December 1997, and will continue to do so.  Should someone wish to meet with me, I would welcome the opportunity to do so at a mutually agreeable time and location.  Any such person may schedule an appointment to discuss those matters of which they are concerned.

When residents have strongly opposing views on an issue before the council, how would you approach making a decision?

I would handle contentious matters in the same way that I would handle non-contentious matters; in a manner that is in the best interests of all citizens of Murray, Kentucky.  Simply because a constituent group, small or large,  has “strongly opposing views” or “strongly favorable views” does not automatically ensure that any such position is best for all citizens.
