Candidate statement

When I retired from the position of Calloway Circuit Court clerk, I stepped away from public service but I did not step away from my commitment to community service here in Murray Kentucky. I am running for city council because I believe I have the necessary experience and skills to make meaningful contributions to city government. My 27 years as a paralegal combined with my 17 years as circuit court clerk has allowed me to make relationships at the local and state level that might benefit the city of Murray. I believe that all levels of government should be transparent and those elected to office have a responsibility to listen to constituents, and then to make the best decision that can be made to benefit all   Murray Kentucky is the greatest place to live in the world. I would like to be a part of moving Murray forward while embracing the friendly and helpful culture that exists here and has existed here for years.

Questions and answers

In your opinion, who is the most underserved population in Murray? How would you use your position on the city council to address their needs?

For sometime now, a topic of discussion has been the need for more affordable housing in Murray, Kentucky. If elected, I would encourage city government to collaborate with governmental partners, local business, and nonprofit agencies to address this issue. There is no easy button to push to solve this problem, but it will never be solved unless we begin to address it by collaborating to reach a satisfactory solution.

How would you make yourself accessible to constituents outside your existing personal and professional circles, and how would you ensure their concerns are heard?

If elected, I would listen to the concerns of all constituents. I would ask questions to make sure that I understood the issue. And I would solicit feedback from individuals who are concerned with the issue. During my 17 years ask Clerk, I did my best to be available to all people who needed to interact with the Circuit Court Clerk’s office. Often, being available to all who needed to access the circuit court clerks office involved meeting with them outside regular office hours.  I would continue that policy if elected to city council and would make myself available not only to the people inside my professional and social circles, but to the entire population of the city of Murray I would propose to do this through working with the mayor and other council members to provide opportunities for listening  sessions.

When residents have strongly opposing views on an issue before the council, how would you approach making a decision?

Listening to all views on an issue would be important to me. Additionally, I would want to do my own research to help me determine what I believe the best course of action would be to benefit everyone.  My own research would involve reading articles written on the subject, discussing the subject independently with those holding strong opinions, seeking out expert opinions and listening to comments and opinions made by other council members during council meetings.
