Crayons, pencils, paper and glue filling store aisles are a sure sign that a new school year is near. As Murray and Calloway County’s two public school districts prepare to welcome students back, here are a few things families should know.
The 2026-27 school year begins Wednesday, Aug. 5, for Calloway County School District students. About 3,000 students attend the district’s five schools: North Calloway, Southwest Calloway and East Calloway elementary schools, Calloway County Middle School and Calloway County High School.
Just under 2,000 students will return to Murray Independent School District on Thursday, Aug. 6. The district includes Murray Elementary School, Murray Middle School and Murray High School.
Families who missed the recent Back to School Block Party and need school supplies may contact their district’s family resource center for assistance. Information about Calloway County Schools’ family resource centers is available here, and information about Murray Independent’s center is available here.
School supply lists for each school in both districts are included in the photo gallery at the top of this story.
School supplies are only one part of preparing for the new year. Ryan Marchetti, CCSD’s director of professional development and public relations, said regular attendance is one of the strongest indicators of academic achievement.
“The best way to prepare for the upcoming school year is to begin practicing nighttime and morning routines at least a week before school starts,” he said.
Both school districts are also gearing up for a new year with family and community volunteers who want to make a difference in students’ lives.
Those interested in volunteering at CCSD, can follow the application instructions here.
Those interested in volunteering at MISD must attend one of the district’s volunteer training sessions; more information is available here.
