Candidate statement

My name is Bonnie Higginson, and I have lived in Murray for most of my life. I graduated from Murray High School and Murray State University and later earned a degree from the University of Georgia. My husband, Cliff, is the former manager of Food Giant. We both grew up in military families and moved frequently in our early years.  We are glad that we chose Murray as our hometown!

I currently serve on the boards of Angels Attic, the Murray Rotary Foundation for Families and Children, and the Murray-Calloway County Community Foundation. I love Murray and its people, and I am committed to serving our city.

I am running for Murray City Council to help us remain a welcoming, vibrant community for residents and businesses. My 39-year career at Murray State University gave me valuable leadership and professional experience, while my recent volunteer work with Angels Attic and other nonprofits has deepened my understanding of our community’s needs. I was fortunate to help establish the Volunteers of America Recovery Community Center, and I hope to continue directing opioid settlement funds toward programs that support people in recovery. If elected to a third term, I will also work with fellow council members to secure adequate funding for our parks and expand affordable housing. Strong cooperation and communication among city, county, and Murray State University leaders are essential because we share the same goal: making our entire community the best it can be. To support that goal, I propose creating focus groups on infrastructure, public services, business development, and housing. Representatives from each entity would meet regularly to share information, identify challenges, improve existing services, and plan for the future.

Questions and answers

In your opinion, who is the most underserved population in Murray? How would you use your position on the city council to address their needs?

Murray residents experiencing housing insecurity are among our most underserved community members. Displacement and homelessness have many causes, including domestic violence, family instability, and substance use disorders. City leaders should collaborate with nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and developers to expand transitional housing in Murray.

How would you make yourself accessible to constituents outside your existing personal and professional circles, and how would you ensure their concerns are heard?

I stay connected with residents through my volunteer work at Angels Attic and the Murray Art Guild. As a City Council member, I promptly refer questions and concerns to the appropriate city official. When I do not know an answer, I consult those who do and follow up to ensure the issue is addressed. I am accessible by phone, email, and Facebook Messenger, and I welcome contact at any time.

When residents have strongly opposing views on an issue before the council, how would you approach making a decision?

Public debate is essential to our democracy. As a council member, I will remain open to residents’ opinions and ideas. The recent data center ordinance demonstrates how public input can strengthen decision-making. By listening without judgment and carefully considering the evidence, I will make decisions that serve the best interests of Murray residents..
