April 7, 1949 – Sept. 27, 2025

Kathryn Coon Harper, 76, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and accomplished artist, passed away on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at her home in Cadiz, KY, surrounded by dear family and friends after a challenging battle with long Covid and ALS.

Born on April 7, 1949, in Monroe, LA, she was the daughter of Luther Coon and Julia Osterland Coon, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her two brothers, James Coon and Arnold Coon.

Kathryn graduated from Louisiana State University with a Master of Fine Arts degree, which laid the foundation for her successful career. For 28 years, she served as a public affairs officer for the TVA, then the U.S. Forest Service, a role that allowed her to blend her love for nature with her exceptional communication skills and creativity. In addition to her full-time career, she shared her love for the arts as an adjunct professor at both LSU and Murray State University, inspiring countless students with her knowledge and passion.

Kathryn found beauty in the world around her, and her creativity knew no bounds. Her talent for conveying the world through her art was masterful. She embraced this skill painting with watercolors, acrylics, oils and sketching gorgeous representations of people, pets, and landscapes culminating in a show of her life’s work at the Janice Mason Art Museum in Cadiz, a true tribute to her style. She was a founding member of the Janice Mason Art Museum and served on its Board of Directors, helping to foster a love for art and culture in her community. She inspired those around her to embrace their passions and pursue their dreams. Kathryn was not just an artist; she was also an accomplished martial artist with a blue belt, a certified yoga instructor, and an avid traveler who embraced life’s adventures with open arms. From her early days as a Girl Scout, she developed a profound love for nature that included horseback riding, camping, and boating.

When she met Wayne Harper, she knew she had found her true partner in this life. They created a warm, inviting, artistic and musical home in Snake Hollow among the vast Hickories, Maples and Dogwoods. They raised the first Harper granddaughter and named her after Wayne’s mother, Margaret, who was so pleased to finally have a girl after having nine wonderful sons and many grandsons. Their horses, cats, dogs, chickens and peacocks thrived on the farm often living longer than average. When Margaret and Shaun Thomas delivered her only granddaughter, Kathryn was over the moon. Julia Grace was a gift from the heavens who brought Kathryn continued joy and astonishment of how a being could be so amazing.

Kathryn saw the light in each person she encountered. She made people feel seen and heard. She took time to connect, to mentor, to provide thoughtful inspiration. She was an example of acceptance in this world that can too often feel divided.

Kathryn is survived by her devoted husband, Wayne Harper, whom she married on November 28, 1978; her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Harper Thomas and Shaun Thomas; and her granddaughter, Julia Grace Thomas.

In her honor, please do something kind for someone. If you’d like to make a contribution to support the Janice Mason Art Museum, the family would be grateful. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Patricia Ann Balentine, age 85, of Murray, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at the Murray-Calloway County Hospital.

Mrs. Balentine was born on February 5, 1940, in Murray, Kentucky, to the late Jeff “Rowdy” Stalls and Alma Lee Kirks Stalls. Patricia retired from Fisher-Price and was a member of the Calvery Temple Pentecostal Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Balentine; and three sisters, Mary Sue Chambers, Betty Carylon Ross and Nancy Lee Farmer.

Survivors include one daughter, Darla Culver Dugger and husband Aaron of Murray, Kentucky; two sons, Jeff Culver of Metropolis, Illinois, and Steve Balentine and wife Crystal of Paducah, Kentucky; one sister, Shirley Stalls Hart of Murray, Kentucky; six grandchildren, Jeffrey Patrick Dugger, Samuel Ray Dugger, Jackson Gage Dugger, Jessica Erickson, Olivia Townsend and Ava Townsend; two great grandchildren, Lilly Nevitt and Ani Erickson.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 4, 2025, at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Bro. Darrell Young and Bro. Tom Clendenon will officiate, and burial will follow in the Murray City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m., Friday, October 3, 2025, at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home & Cremation Services.

Mrs. Barbara Karnes Denton, 68, of Kirksey, KY, passed away on Tuesday, September 30, 2025 at her home.

Mrs. Denton was born on May 18, 1957 in Boyd County, KY to the late Walter and Norma Bouldin Karnes.  She retired from Murray State University and was a member of Goshen United Methodist Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Francis and Rebecca.

Those she lovingly leaves behind include her husband, Mr. Jesse Denton of Kirksey, KY; a daughter, Jeren of Murray, KY; three sisters, Jamie of Hanson, KY, Susan of Houston, TX, Jane of Murray, KY and one beloved granddaughter, Maple.  

Her family welcomes visitors from 1 pm until 3 pm on Friday, October 3, 2025 at Kirksey United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Barbara Ann Barnett, age 87, of Murray, Kentucky, passed away Monday, September 29, 2025, at Calvert City Nursing & Rehab in Calvert City, Kentucky.

Mrs. Barnett was born on February 22, 1938, in Murray, Kentucky. She worked at Murray Wholesale and, with her husband Dale, operated Barnett Farms. She was a member of Elm Grove Baptist Church, where she was part of the Golden Circle Sunday School Class and served for many years as church secretary.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vermal Wilkinson Wicker and Toy Tucker; stepfather, Pat Wicker; husband, Dale Barnett; to whom she married on December 22, 1956, in Murray, Kentucky; and brother, Gary Wicker.

Survivors include two nephews, Keith Wicker and wife Teresa of Almo, Kentucky and Mike Wicker and wife Rhonda of Almo, Kentucky; three sisters-in-law, Rhonda Wrye of Murray, Kentucky, Maxine Sutts of Grosse Pointe, Michigan and Rachel Wolske of River Rouge, Michigan; one brother-in-law, J.L. Barnett and wife Barbara of Murray, Kentucky; four great nieces, Whitney Prescott and husband Adam of Knoxville, Tennessee, Shauna Traylor and husband Zack of Murray, Kentucky, Jessica Wicker and Alyssa Wicker both of Lexington, Kentucky; two great nephews, Tyler Schanbacher and wife Tosha of Benton, Kentucky and Blake Schanbacher of Murray, Kentucky; several great nieces and nephews; as well as several cousins survive.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 13, 2025, at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Rev. Dianna Kay (Paschall) Spain, of Almo, KY passed away Monday September 29, 2025, at the Fulton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born May 25, 1948, in Henry County, TN, Dianna was the daughter of the late Oxie and Bertie (Manning) Paschall. She was a loving homemaker and a faithful member of Almo Church of Christ.

Dianna has led a faithful Christian life and dearly loved her Almo Church of Christ family. Her greatest joy was giving to others, and she certainly practiced 2 Corinthians 9:7, as she was always a cheerful giver. She loved going to the movies, all things Elvis, and spending time with family and friends. She was truly a blessing to everyone that knew her.

In addition to her parents, Dianna was preceded in death by her husband Gary Spain, her loving brother, Patrick Michael Paschall, twin brothers, Randy and Andy Paschall, who died at birth; as well as her dear aunt and uncle, James (Jug) and Ruby Lindsey and nephew Jeff Durham.

Those left to cherish memories of Dianne include her son, Jason Spain (Samantha) of Lawton, OK, and her cherished grandchildren, Gavin, Logan and Ryah Spain; her sister-in-law, Beverly Paschall; nephews Darren Paschall (Lynn) and Shane Paschall (Pam); niece Rhonda Durham; and great nephews and nieces, Jared Paschall (Sherrie), Tyler Paschall, Brooke Harness (Jeremy), Ashton Downey (Brock), Paige Ellioitt (Hudson), John and Hampton Durham and Jacob and Jade Oakley. Also surviving are her cousins, Greg Bouffard (Kathy) and Dr. Keith Bouffard, of Michigan and dear friends Mary Stubblefield of Almo, Melisa Fearn of Murray, and Mary Bell of Sequim, WA.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, October 3, 2025, in the chapel of the Blalock-Coleman Funeral Home in Murray, with John Dale officiating. Entombment will follow the service in the Murray Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

July 6, 1952 – Sept. 28, 2025

Ronnie Rae Arnett, of Murray, KY, passed away on September 28th, 2025, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Ronnie lived a life full of adventure, compassion for others, and selfless service to her family and to the community. She was born in Dalhart, Texas in 1952 and moved with her family to Buchanan, TN. She graduated from Henry County High School and attended Freed Hardeman College. Ronnie later graduated from Murray State University with a Bachelor of Science degree and obtained two master’s degrees in social work and communications. Ronnie moved to Anchorage, AK in 1999 where she lived for twenty years and worked as a social worker and case manager, serving that community as an advocate for the homeless at Brother Francis Shelter. She also taught Public Speaking and Interpersonal Communications at the University of Alaska-Anchorage.

Ronnie cared most about her six children, Michael, Samuel, Daniel, Benjamin, Susan and Jeremiah, and considered them her life’s most treasured accomplishments. She had a strong work ethic and a love for lifelong learning. She encouraged her children and countless others to attend college and earn their degrees. Ronnie was the life embodiment of Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree” and also wrote poetry herself. She retired and moved back to Murray, KY to be closer to her children, 28 cherished grandchildren, and four daughters-in-law (Sarah, Christie, Sara, and Misty).

She was a wonderful cook and was always happy to share her delicious blueberry muffins and homemade rolls. As the matriarch of the Arnett family, she taught her kids how to drive a stick shift, shop thriftfully, be kind to others, and live life like Christ instructed. Ronnie had a unique gift to see the best in people and constantly encouraged those around her to understand and meet their potential. In addition to being survived by her children and grandchildren, she is survived by her husband Marion Ward and two sisters, Cathy Frank and Floy Nell Carl.

Honoring Ronnie’s wishes, a private graveside service will be held for family at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Buchanan, TN.

Mr. Kenneth D. “Sonny” Coy, 87 of Almo, KY, passed away Saturday, September 27, 2025, at the Anna Mae Owen Residential Hospice House in Murray, KY.

Born August 13, 1938, in Stewart Co., TN, Sonny was the son of the late Clarence Calvin Coy and Esther (Wofford) Coy. He dedicated 38 years to serving as the Parts Manager at Purdom Motors, followed by 16 years in the parts department at Dwain Tayor Chevrolet, where his knowledge and helpful nature were valued by both coworkers and customers. Sonny was a member of Independence United Methodist Church and attended Calvary Temple Church.

Those left to cherish memories of Sonny include his wife of 48 years, Wilma Dean (Oakley) Coy; his children, Kenny Coy and Michael Coy of Murray, Lisa Foy of Mayfield, and Sherri Whitten of St. Charles, MO; a grandson, Jacob Coy of Almo; and a niece, Judy Litchfield of Benton.

In addition to his parents, Sonny was preceded in death his brother, Howard Wilton Coy; and sisters, Edna Cunningham Holland and Patricia Coy.

Ms. Brenda Lee Mitchell, age 76, of Murray, Kentucky, passed away on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at the Mercy Health-Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, Kentucky.

Brenda was born on May 25, 1949, in Champagne, Illinois, to the late Walter Henry Mitchell and Barbara Ann Comstock Mitchell Thompson. She was a retired Lieutenant with the Whitfield County, Georgia, Sheriff’s office.

Survivors include one daughter, Kerry Ann Bruce of Dalton, Georgia (Stephanie); two sons, Brian Kendall Bruce of Murray, Kentucky (daughters Vanessa and Megan, and son Shawn); Joshua Blake Sanches Bruce of Corpus Christi, Texas (sons Michael, Ethan and Jackson) plus six great-grandchildren.

Brenda’s siblings include Leesa Mitchell, Melissa Thompson Milby, and her late brother Michael Kent Mitchell, as well as Mark Mitchell, Rebecca Mitchell Williams, Jeffery Revelette, Tammy Revelette and the late Byron Edward Revelette from her father’s second marriage to the late Agnes Mitchell. Brenda was always a hard worker with a quirky sense of humor who was loved by all.

Mrs. Joetta (Cook) Johnson, age 86, of Murray, Kentucky, passed away on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at the Passion and Purpose HomeCare Assisted Living for our SENIORS.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Calloway County, Kentucky, on May 12, 1939, to the late L.D. Cook and Ethel (Canter) Cook. Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker and a member of the Salem Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Pat Johnson, to whom she married on November 2, 1957, in Corinth, Mississippi; as well as one brother, L.D. Cook, Jr.

Wendy Jean Hineson, age 65, of Benton, KY, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2025.

Born in Montreal, Canada, Wendy was the beloved daughter of the late Gary Hineson and Jean Robie. A hardworking and dedicated individual, Wendy spent her life working in maintenance, where she rose to the role of supervisor through her commitment, leadership, and strong work ethic.

She is survived by her loving brother, Gary Hineson (Jackie) of Benton, KY, and her cherished nephew, Tyler Hineson.

Mr. Joseph Braxton Williams, age 75, of Murray, Kentucky, passed away on Monday, September 22, 2025, at the Clinton Place in Clinton, Kentucky.

Mr. Williams was born on May 20, 1950, in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Joseph Bourne Williams and Helen (Martin) Williams. Before becoming ill Mr. Williams was the owner and operator of East Village Court Mobile Home Park in Murray. Mr. Williams graduated from Murray High School in 1968, played football at Murray High School under Coach Ty Holland, and was voted most popular his senior year of high school.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Harriet Kaye Williams.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 27, 2025, at the Murray City Cemetery with Bro. Boyd Smith officiating. There will be no public visitation held before the graveside service.

Mrs. Geneva Sue McCage, age 92, of Murray, Kentucky passed away on Monday, September 22, 2025, at the Anna Mae Owen Residential Hospice House in Murray, Kentucky.

Mrs. McCage was born on June 22, 1933, in Murray, Kentucky to the late Winfred Allison and Pearl (King) Allison. She was the former owner and operator of Rudys Diner from 1964-1970 and the Murray Dairy Queen for 17 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnie McCage who passed away in 2016; two sons, Mike and John McCage; one sister, Eloise Lee; as well as one brother, Harry Allison.

Survivors include one daughter, Regina Perry of Murray, Kentucky; one daughter-in-law, Polly McCage of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Barber of Lakeland, Florida and Sue Allison of Murray, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Kim Morris and husband Scott of Murray, Kentucky, Kari Brown and husband Daniel of Vail, Colorado; Melissa Baxter and husband Adam of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Jennifer McCage of Colorado Springs, Colorado; seven great-grandchildren, Kaeleigh Morris of Murray, Kentucky, Roland and Sebastian Baxter both of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Zach Baxter of Perkinston, Mississippi, and Maddie Brown, Seth Brown, and Clarissa Brown all of Vail, Colorado; as well as two great-great-grandchildren, Willa and Wilder Morris both of Murray, Kentucky.

Private family services will be held. There will be no public service or visitation.

Carole Jean Steele, 76, of East Palatka passed from this life on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at Kindred Hospital in Green Cove Springs, Florida following an extended illness, surrounded by her loving family.

A native from Nashville, Tennessee, graduated from OCC, Oklahoma Christian College, where she met her future husband, Billy Joe Steele, while he was attending his Ministry Programs. They were married for 48 years.

Billy was in the Air Force and a missionary for the Church of Christ. He was stationed in Subic Bay Naval Base in the Philippines. A year later Carole joined him, and they both adopted their children, Jeannie and James.

Carole not only was a devoted & faithful Christian, but a preachers’ wife at best, alongside of Billy. She worked as an office manager for a medical company in Indiana for many years. She was an active member of the College Road Church of Christ in Palatka, Florida. She had led Ladies classes for the Christian women in the church. Carole enjoyed gardening, sewing, scrapbooking and Ancestry Genealogy research.

She was preceded by her loving husband, Billy Joe Steele, her parents, Leland and Thelma Ellis, and her sister, Jennie Lazorchek (Dave).

Carole is survived by her daughter, Jeannie D. (Steele)-Sidibe, her son, James D. Steele, and grandson, Kuba L. Steele.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. at the College Road Church of Christ, Palatka along with Bro. C.L. Overturf Jr. and Bro. Chuck Blocker officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation and viewing from 4:00 till service at 5:00 p.m.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. at Friendship Cemetery in Murray, Kentucky on Thursday, September 25, 2025. Charles Taylor will officiate, and burial will follow.

Ms. Mary Jane Jackson, 86, of Hendersonville, TN, formerly of Murray, KY, passed away on Friday, September 19, 2025 at Clarendale at Indian Lake in Hendersonville, TN.  

Mary Jane was born in Wardell, Missouri on August 11, 1939 and moved to Murray in 1971, where she lived until 2021. While in Murray, Mary Jane was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church. Mary Jane loved the church and was dedicated to volunteering her time with bereavement meals.

In her younger years, she was active in the tennis community, and throughout her life she was known for her passion for fashion. Absolutely no one loved red lipstick more than Mary Jane, a signature part of her timeless style. She spent over 30 years helping women feel beautiful at The Place and The Palm. She was proud of her daily walks, averaging five miles a day, but her greatest accomplishment was always her family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Roy Dillard and Mary Fisher Dillard, as well as a brother, Roy Francis, Jr.

She is survived by her son, Chris Jackson (Amy) of Hendersonville, TN; daughters, Candace Dandeneau of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Melanie Jackson of Murray, KY. Also surviving are her beloved grandchildren, Sam, Max, Laney, Clay, Cole, Jaclin, and Noah. Mr. Long was born on October 2, 1959, in Terre Haute, Indiana to the late Bob Davis and Ella Faye (Niccum) Long Davis. He was a self-employed mechanic.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Delia Long and Janet (Long) Free; as well as three brothers, Bobby Long, Floyd Long, and Jacob Long.

Mrs. Tina Orrell, age 55, of Hardin, Kentucky, and formerly of Michigan, passed away leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness.

She is survived by her devoted friend and caregiver, Debbie Smith of Hardin, as well as Ashley Wallace of Paducah and Hailey Lopez of Benton.

Known affectionately as “TT,” Tina was a proud Nanny to Ashley and Hailey for eight years as they grew up. She often said they were “her girls,” and the bond they shared was one of deep love and joy.

Tina had a lifelong love for animals, and her “fur baby grands” — Lola, Kash, and Lily — will dearly miss her gentle cuddles and the comfort she brought to their lives.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Stanley, in 2005.

Tina will be remembered for her generous spirit, tender heart, and the special role she played in the lives of those she loved.

Mrs. Charlotte Anne Huffine, 91, of Hazel, KY, passed away on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 at the Anna Mae Owen Residential Hospice House.  

Mrs. Huffine was born to the late Herbert and Charlotte Goosens Persohn on June 11, 1934 in Evansville, IN.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 62 years, Mr. Leroy Huffine and two siblings. 

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Daniel Huffine (Patricia) of Hazel, KY; a daughter, Terri Haggard (David) of Evansville, IN; three grandchildren, Missy, Adrianne and DJ as well as six great grandchildren.

Mrs. Huffine will be laid to rest at Tupman Cemetery in Evansville, IN at a later date.

Mrs. Virginia A. Houston, age 82, of Murray, Kentucky, passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at the Anna Mae Owen Residential Hospice House.

Mrs. Houston was born in Cadiz, Kentucky, on June 29, 1943, to the late Woodrow Harper and Etta (Dunn) Harper. Mrs. Houston retired from Fisher Price and was of the Baptist faith, while attending Northside Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Houston was preceded in death by her husband, Donald S. Houston, who passed away on April 9, 2024; one brother, Rabon Harper; a nephew, Steve Harper; and a great nephew, Kyle Harper.

Mrs. Houston is survived by her stepson, Keith Houston and wife Amy; two step grandchildren, Ryan Houston and wife Brittney and Taylor Houston and wife Chelsey; four step great grandchildren, Lawson, Charlotte, Kane, and Kallie Houston; nephew, Dwayne Harper and wife Pam; great niece, Darby Lax; and close friends, Mindy Parker and Martha Harper all of Murray, Kentucky.

A memorial graveside will be held on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. at Murray Memorial Gardens. Bro. Brett Miles will officiate, and burial will follow.

Dec. 4, 1943 – Sept. 15, 2025

John David Murphy – known by all as David or Dave since childhood – died peacefully on September 15th at the Anna Mae Owen Hospice House in Murray, Kentucky surrounded by his loving family.

David was born in Jamaica, Queens, New York, on December 4, 1941, three days before the bombing of Pearl Harbor but in some circles, equally noteworthy. He attended Holy Cross High School in Bayside, Queens. At Georgetown University he received a bachelor’s degree in history and English with a minor in philosophy, followed by an MBA from Drexel University. David started his career at Merck in 1965 as a pharmaceutical representative, and quickly moved up the corporate structure. He was named director of international personnel, moving his young family to England for three and a half years, then re-settling in Princeton Junction, New Jersey. He retired from Merck in 1993, and began a new career as an independent consultant.

Eventually retiring for real, David and his wife relocated to Murray, Kentucky. David’s greatest joy was without doubt his three daughters and his wife. A devout Catholic, he was a Eucharistic minister, a lecturer, and the director of RCIA. David enjoyed military movies and books, building model ships and planes, and teaching his grandchildren about dinosaurs and history. He loved a good joke and his girls inherited his contagious smile and tearful laughter. He was a big man in size, presence, and heart.

David was predeceased by his eldest daughter, Frances Robb Murphy.

David is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Jo, his daughter Elizabeth Porter (Adam) of Washington DC, his daughter Megan Smetana (ZB/Zbynek), and his four amazing grandchildren John, Thomas, Catherine, and Sean.

A funeral mass will be held at 12:00 p.m., Friday, September 19, 2025, at the St. Leo Catholic Church in Murray, Kentucky with Father Josh McCarty officiating. Burial will follow in the Murray City Cemetery. There will be no public visitation held before the funeral mass.

Mr. Jackie “Jack” Edward Vaughn, age 77, of Murray, Kentucky, passed away on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at his home.

Mr. Vaughn was born on September 27, 1947, in Calloway County, Kentucky to the late Claude Edward Vaughn and Annie (Cole) Vaughn. He was a retired self-employed plumber and was a United States Navy-Seabee Vietnam Veteran. Mr. Vaughn was a lifetime member of the VFW, member of the American Legion Post #73, and lifetime member of the VVA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, JoAnn Humphreys.

Survivors include his wife, Suzette (Johnson) Vaughn of Murray, Kentucky; they married on March 18, 1970, in Henry County, Tennessee; one daughter, Gidget Pettibon and husband Michael of Wichita Falls, Texas; three grandchildren, Timothy Smith and wife Fontana of Norfolk, Virginia, Nicholas Smith and wife Aireann of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Ethan Pettibon of Wichita Falls, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Mia and Leo Smith both of Norfolk, Virginia and Gidget Smith of Wichita Falls, Texas; as well as family friends, Lucas Chesnut of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, Carmen Koehn and Robbie Marquardt both of Murray, Kentucky.

Mr. Philip McSwain Byrn, age 68, of Nashville, Tennessee, passed away Saturday, September 13, 2025, due to natural causes, at his family’s home in Murray, Kentucky.

Mr. Byrn was born on November 18, 1956, in Hopkinsville, Kentucky to the late James Milton Byrn and Dorothy Ruth (McSwain) Byrn. Philip grew up in Murray, Ky and graduated from Murray High School in 1975. Philip was a Methodist and earned his Boy Scout Eagle Award with BSA Troop 45. He worked as a lifeguard at scout camp as a teenager and taught many scouts how to swim. Philip was a Kentucky Colonel. He earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Western Kentucky University. He worked in property management in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois and Memphis, Tn. He worked for the State of Tennessee Housing and Urban Development. He owned a small business, Loan and Financial Services, in Nashville, Tn. Recently, he has been a real estate agent/broker in Nashville.

Philip was incredibly curious about many subjects and enjoyed talking with people from different cultures to learn about their life experiences and views of the world. He was an avid reader and collector of books. He said having books was a way of storing knowledge. Philip loved water skiing and fishing at Kentucky Lake, swimming laps at the Y, and dancing and listening to the singers at the VFW.

Survivors include his sister, Emily Byrn Scarborough; a niece, Rebecca Scarborough (Deyland Somer); a nephew, Nicholas Scarborough (Diana), and several cousins.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 10, 2025, at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Rev. Jeff Rudy and Rev. Hal McSwain officiating. Mrs. Helen K. Bensen, age 96, a 49-year resident of Hollow Rock, TN, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at Patriot Health and Rehabilitation in Paris, TN.

Daughter of the late John C. Legg and Jenny Brown she was born in Saugerties, NY, the sixth child in a family of 10 siblings. Helen worked in the sewing industry as a seamstress as a teen. She helped to raise her younger siblings and provided support for the large family. In 1953 she met her future husband Paul of Berne NY at the racetrack in South Westerlo, NY and they were married in 1954 at the Methodist Church in Saugerties. After their marriage she joined her husband and his family in working the family dairy farm in Rensselaerville, NY. It was quite a transition for Helen, having grown up and lived so many years in a small city, but she used her skills and made the adjustment easily.

Their first son, Gordon was born in 1955, Bruce was next in 1956, then Kathleen in 1959 and finally they were blessed by Janets birth in 1967. As the children grew, they learned their roles on the farm. Helen and Paul both were patient teachers and the farm thrived. Canning, cooking, sewing and driving the tractor in the summer’s baling hay were just a few of the chores Helen took on. The garden in the summer was most important to fill jars for the long West Mountain Winters. Helen was a master seamstress and sewed her children’s clothes for years.

In 1976 the couple purchased a large farm in West Tennessee and moved their life to the sunny south. Helen was a true homesteader throughout her married life of 66 years to Paul. They worked side by side throughout the years on both farms. After they moved to Tennessee, Helen became interested in sewing quilts. The total number of quilts she has made isn’t known but you can be sure her children and grandchildren received more than one and many stuffed animals and toys all made with her love. She truly had a special talent for creating useful but beautiful things all sewn on the Singer machine gifted to her by Paul when they married. Husband Paul passed away in 2020 and the next year Helen transitioned from the farm to Patriot Health. She was well loved by staff and residents and will be missed every day.

Helen is survived by her children Gordon and Tracy of Rensselaerville, NY, Bruce who resides on the family farm in Hollow Rock, TN, Kate of Paris, TN and Janet and Dave of Murray, KY. There are eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. The family wishes to thank everyone at Patriot that tenderly cared for our mother. She loved you all like her own.

Helen will be laid to rest next to her beloved Paul in the Bensen family plot at the Rensselaerville Cemetery Methodist Hill Rd. Rensselaerville, NY. There will be a graveside service held on October 18, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in lieu of flowers please donate to the National Audubon Society.

Mrs. Joyce Ann Kingins, age 82, of Murray, Kentucky, passed away Friday, September 12, 2025, at the Vanderbilt Medical Center.

Mrs. Kingins was born in Louisville, Kentucky on May 4, 1943, to the late William Taylor McCubbins and Rose Francis Sturgeon. She was a caregiver and worked for Murray Calloway County Transportation. She was a member of the Grace Baptist Church and was currently attending Purpose Church.

Joyce loved her family fiercely and welcomed anyone into it. She left her mark not only on her family but also being the most enthusiastic bus driver to hundreds of kids over the years. Later in life she enjoyed and took pride in taking care of the elderly.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters, one daughter, Roberta England, and one granddaughter, Amanda England.

Survivors include three daughters, Tina Suzette Hill and husband Bobby, Deanna Marie Gomez and husband Mario, and Melissa Rae Thompson and husband Jay; special niece/daughter, Verna Jean Laha and husband Jim; thirteen grandchildren, Greg Collins and wife Gina, Tyler Collins and wife Kasie, Brittany Collins, Chance Randolph and wife Holly, Jordyn Wells and husband Brandon, Mario Gomez jr. and wife Kim, Erica Hill, Kacie Hill, Allie McClain and husband Dustin, Kenzie Brindley and Fiancé’ Derrick Duffy, Courtney Thompson, Keaton Moore and fiancé Kasey Turner, and Mickey England and wife Jennifer. Mr. Melvin Wayne Jenkins, 82, of Calvert City, KY, passed away on Thursday, September 11, 2025 at Marshall County Hospital.

His younger years were spent fishing and hunting in Rochester, Kentucky. Wayne married his bride of 60 years Linda Peterson Jenkins on July 12, 1965. Wayne commercial fished the area lakes and rivers for over 58 years. He loved fishing and hunting.

Wayne loved the Lord and if you ever had a conversation with him, it would always lead to talking about the Bible. Wayne and Linda raised their two children, Wayne Allan Jenkins and Jeanette Davis Jenkins in Calvert City.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Melvin E. and Hazel Jenkins and many aunts and uncles.

Those left to cherish many wonderful memories include his loving wife of 60 years, Mrs. Linda Jenkins of Calvert City, KY; a son, Wayne Jenkins (Johnna) of Calvert City, KY; a daughter, Jeanette Jenkins Davis of Calvert City, KY; four precious grandchildren, Shelby Swatzell, Coy Swatzell, Evan Jenkins and Brittney Jenkins Germany; three beautiful great grandchildren, Samuel Dustin Hughes, Kaylee Jo Hughes and Madeline Rose Hughes. Also surviving is a brother, Gary Jenkins of Bowling Green, KY; a sister, Kathy Jenkins Phelps (Robert) of Calvert City, KY; along with many nieces, great nieces, nephews and great nephews. Wayne loved his family and his face would light up when he talked about them.

His celebration of life will take place at Abundant Life Worship Center, 511 Kentucky 95, Calvert City, KY on Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at 6 pm.

Mr. Jesse “Sonny” Henley, age 70, of Texas, formerly of Murray, Kentucky, passed away, Friday, September 5, 2025, following an extended illness. It is now with heavy hearts and deep respect that we gather our thoughts to commemorate the passing of a remarkable individual whose presence touched the lives of many. In times of loss, we reflect not only on the sorrow that accompanies departure but also on the profound joy, wisdom, and warmth that emanated from a life well lived. This obituary is a celebration—a narrative woven from the threads of cherished memories, lasting contributions, and the enduring imprint left upon family, friends, church, community, and country.

Jesse “Sonny” Henley graduated Murray High School, Class of 1972, and then attended Murray State University before entering the United States Navy in 1975 and training to be a Senior Nuclear Reactor Operator where he soon oversaw the operations and maintenance of twin 550-Megawatt nuclear power plants aboard the USS Nimitz (CVN 68). Aboard the Nimitz aircraft carrier during 1979 to ’80, he participated in the longest U.S. Naval deployment since the end of World War II in support of the Iranian Hostage Crisis.

After leaving the Navy, he attended Memphis State University, attaining a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and embarked on a career culminating as one of the world’s foremost experts in missile design, targeting, acquisition, and engagement systems while serving as the Senior Project Engineer for both the Patriot and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) ICBM missile defense systems. As part of his duties, he performed weekly group briefings for the various Secretaries of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and three Presidential Administrations for over six years. This was followed by numerous other military defense development projects until his retirement in 2021. He was an inspirational man, loved and respected by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Diana; Father Melvin Henley and wife Rita (Murray, KY); daughters Marissa and husband, Kristi and husband Chris and husband, K’lynn and Shelly; his son Chris and wife; his brothers Stan Henley and wife Janet (Murray, KY), Matthew Boardman and wife Stacy (Murray, KY), and Shane Henley (Almo, KY); and 12 grandchildren.

Jesse was preceded in death by his mother Eva Lou, first wife Cindy who departed in 1981 and his son, Lee Michael, departed in 2005 following his graduation from ole Miss University. Also preceding Jesse in death were his brothers Steve Henley and Stuart Henley.

There will be a graveside memorial service and internment at 1:30pm on Saturday, October 4th at the Story’s Chapel Cemetery, 3640 Edgehill Trail, Hazel, KY generally located in the Southwest portion of Calloway County. VFW Post 6291 of Murray, KY will be providing military honors. Friends and family are invited to attend.
