The Calloway County Jail also issued a press release regarding the passing of Captain Hopkins, which read, in part:

Captain Hopkins dedicated most of his life to public service both as a firefighter early in his life and a deputy jailer. He began his career at the Calloway County Jail in January of 2011. As a Deputy Jailer he showed great leadership skills which helped him work his way up the ranks to Sergeant & Lieutenant before being promoted to Captain in 2019.

His leadership, guidance, and devotion to his job will be deeply missed. The loss of Captain Hopkins is profoundly felt by, not only his family, but also by the men and women of the Calloway County Jail who served alongside him every day. Over the course of his career, Captain Hopkins became an integral part of the daily operations of the jail & was highly respected by both his colleagues & the people he came in contact with at our jail. He was awarded the Murray Lion’s Club Deputy Jailer of the Year award in 2022 after being nominated by Jailer Ken Claud. He was a mentor to many people, whether they were a brand new deputy, a seasoned veteran or an incarcerated individual going through a hard time, he was always there to guide them along the way.

“Mike, we thank you for your service to Calloway County; brother, we will miss you but we know you’re not in pain any longer, we still just can’t believe you’re gone!”
