Coach Bobby Toon, 90, of Murray, Kentucky, passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at the Anna Mae Owen Residential Hospice House in Murray.
Mr. Toon was born on Jan. 12, 1936, in Crutchfield, Ky., to the late Milford Toon and Mamie (Gore) Toon. He was a United States Army private having served in the Cold War. Upon returning home, he attended Murray State University where he played football and ran track.
Mr. Toon was a retired teacher and coach, having coached high school basketball and football for approximately 20 years. During that time, he coached at Murray High, Calloway County and Marshall County, even leading the Murray High basketball team to the state tournament in 1974.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Shirley (Cathey) Toon, six brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include one daughter, Shara Olivier and husband Mike Olivier, of El Cajon, California; three grandchildren, Jacqueline Brown and husband Nathan Brown, of Hendersonville, Tennessee, Caroline Olivier and husband Peter Cuppernull, of Brooklyn, New York, and Stephen Olivier and fiancé Claire Holland, of Dallas, Texas; three great grandchildren, Cameron, Miles and Faith Brown; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 29, at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home & Cremation Services. John Dale will officiate and burial to follow in the Murray City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m., Saturday, March 29, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the MISD Foundation For Excellence, P.O. Box 1417, Murray, KY 42071 for the future establishment of a scholarship honoring Mr. Toon’s years of service to the Murray Independent School District.
